"Love ceases to be a demon only when he ceases to be a god." - M. Denis de Rougemont
It is generally recognised that love for certain things - a woman, one's country - can elevate itself above love for God.
Love, being virtuous, cannot escalate itself above God. Just because you love something does not clothe it with trumping power.
Love for a thing, a woman, a country, a cause - these are descendants of love for God. We can love God by appropriately loving the good things of His creation. He is the parent of all right love.
God, after all, is love. Love is not God. Nor is love a god. If it is, it has become an unwanted demon.
