The irony of the promise

God promised the Israelites, upon freeing them from Egypt, that He would take them into the Promised Land. He described the Promised Land as a land flowing with milk and honey.

The fulfillment of the promise would involved milk and honey.

Is it not curious that in the passage to the Promised Land (in the desert) God denied them food and drink. The very thing He promised them He delayed giving them.

This is the irony of the promise.

To obtain the promise they would have to believe in something far greater than in receiving food and drink. They would have to put their faith in the entire character of God.

The only way to see the irony of the promise is to believe in God's whole nature, and to regard Him as both faithful and kind in equal measure.

God puts His reputation on the line with every promise. Those who choose to affirm His reputation will see His reputation confirmed with breath-taking power.
