Psalm 60 is an incredible Psalm. In the build up to the church God has repeatedly made me promises fresh out of Psalm 60. From His sanctuary God makes a promise that He has delineated territory for the church to conquer. It is territory that He has marked off, parcelled out, apportioned. It has our name upon it. It is allotted and assigned to us. It just needs to be taken. Best of all, the promise contains an undertaking by God Himself that He will fight the battles for us and secure the victories. It is rousing and it is encouraging.
The territory God promises is none other than the impressive list of: Abraham's first altar to the Lord in the Promised Land; Jacob's first camp in the Promised Land after his exile; Joseph's children's land; and then the enemy territory of Moab, Edom and the Philistines.
Urban Design Church is on a mission to get people into fellowship with God. More than that, we are at war. We are Christian pirates, armed to the teeth in the fight for men's lost souls. Our bows are loaded with the heavy canons of prayer. We fly the holy flag of the skull of Golgotha and the unbroken bones of the perfect and risen Saviour. We are rough and ready. We have been given a naval commission to sail the high seas and make conquests for a glorious King. We are pirates who drive a rescue ship, combing the choppy seas, plucking drowing men and hauling them on board.
The world does not need a toothless church. It needs a church with bite.
We will preach about men's sin and the need for a Saviour called Jesus. We will assemble around this truth and nothing else. We will not depart from it. Church is the collection of people who gather around the preaching that Jesus is both Lord and Saviour. That is how we will be defined.
