"Character," according to DL Moody, "is what you are in the dark."
One of the pre-conditions for doing something that brings glory to God, is that no one should know what you are doing.
As soon as someone knows, our motive invariably becomes compromised.
Alternately stated, when no one knows the only person we could possibly be doing the act for, would be God.
And where the act constitutes suffering, we certainly know the act is not being done for self - interest.
This is why God purposes for us to go through pain alone.
That is also why He purposes for us go through pain often with the impression that He is not close.
In such a place when we act for God optimal glory will result.
Decisions made for God in such a place will sound in His glory.
It is at the very point of crying out in exasperation "Where are you, God?" that we know we are about to enter an opportunity to bring Him glory.
Character is what you are in the dark.
