Defining the giant

One of fear's greatest weapons is the shadow. Fear likes to dress up like a shadow and cast a shadowy presence. Fear trades in the shadows of the room bluffing with a presence that appears larger than reality.

 

Often, God allows fears into our lives because it gives us a visual of what we have to become to overcome the giant. Once we have defined the giant, stripped it of its pretence and hyperbole, and chiselled out its shape, then we can see clearly.

 

A clearly defined fear holds the keys to what I am to become to overcome the fear. If the fear looks like that, then a man who looks like this will surmount this particular fear. The fear always points to the man I can become who is greater than the fear. A fear gives me a sculpted picture of who God wants me to become.

 

Define your fear. Map out its contours. Engage with what the fear produces in you. List every negative emotion the fear invokes. Then write a second list of the very opposites of those negative emotions the fear invokes. That second list is the description of the man God wants you to become.

 

If you take that second list to God and ask Him to provide you with the resources to become that man, He will provide and He will bless you. Because He is faithful. And because He loves you. And because He is victorious and can supply your every frailty with power. But you have to trust Him.
