The major problem of the human heart is guilt. Guilt is an ailment whereby we reject ourselves because we inherently know that we are not good enough by some external measure. We don't pass muster; and we know it when we are honest. In the result, what people want more than anything is acceptance and approval of who they are.People fear being rejected. People fear failure because they know that failure leads to rejection.
One of the fruits of guilt is that we cannot give ourselves the acceptance we seek. Our guilt immediately fails us. We are obliged to look to external things that are more capable than we are to provide the approval we crave. In short, humans are looking for an endorser, someone to sponsor their soul and vouch for their approval.
However, no sponsor comes free of charge. Sponsors are expensive. Endorsement of the soul does not come cheap. If it did come cheap, the sponsorship would not be that valuable. But what can a person who is poor in soul and 'not good enough' actually afford? Well, there is one thing that even the poorest soul has to give: His worship. And thus the soul enters into a frightful transaction. The soul will give its worship to the sponsor-idol; and the sponsor-idol will endorse the soul.The more powerful the sponsor-idol, the greater the demanded price of worship, the higher the endorsement. Next, people call the sponsor-idol 'god'. My 'god' will save me from my self-rejection and my external rejection, the idol-worshipper cries as he offers his worship. Sponsor-idols become saviours.
