Pride

I have long pondered those verses in the gospels which detail Jesus' disciples arguing over who was more prominent or important in the discipleship team. The crime was not that they were trying to usurp Jesus' prominence; but that they were elevating themselves above their comrades. Just because you acknowledge Jesus as number one does not immunize you against pride.

 

Many acts of pride are committed in the name of exalting Jesus as number one... and then the self as number two. Jesus is only number one where it does not matter who is number two.
