Walking humbly with God

For many years God has taught me that the highest version of success is to walk humbly with Him. Humility is defined as the ability to let God be God, and to act accordingly. It is the highest thing any person can aim at. And it is thoroughly attainable.

The world is comparison-driven to a fault. Men judge success by reference to other men. Lesser men make me successful; whilst greater men make me a failure. But the true measure of success is not found in the rough and ready comparison with one's fellow man. True success is whether one is following God, as best as possible, in what God has called one to do.

Faithfulness to what God has called one to do is the touchstone of success. No other measure will do.

But beware - following God will always entail a wilderness period. It is in those times that the temptation will exist to compare oneself to others. Here the result will always be a feeling of failure - because that is what the wilderness is, by definition: The place of seeming barrenness or fruitlessness.

However, those who truly understand will see nothing but success where God leads them into the wilderness, just because they are in the wilderness. For following God into the wilderness only happens because of a choice to humbly follow Him. And following Him, even into a lack of 'success', is success in its own right. If it really is all about Him and not about me, then the wilderness should present no difficulty to me.
